GUEST BEDROOM REVEAL + DIY HEADBOARD
I guess you could call this a reveal?! I’ll put a photo at the end of what the room transformed from, but the highlight of this post is about this DIY headboard we made!
Here are the items we used:
LEATHER STRAP HEADBOARD DIY:
- 01. Quilt Batting – cushion for your board
- 02. Fabric of your choice (linked similar) – I used a linen blend that I found at the craft store!
- 03. Leather strips – I used a 1.5 inch wide leather band cut to the length of your headboard plus some extra inches to hang off the headboard.
- 04. MDF Plywood – Since I was making two headboards, I purchased a large plywood sheet (0.5 inch thick) and had them cut to size (24″ length for both; 76″ width for king, 60″ width for queen)
- 05. Scrap wood – placed this in the center of the plywood to install hardware for hanging and have some distance between the wall and headboard. I used about an inch thick scrap.
- 06. Staple gun
- 07. Gold nails – to install leather straps onto wall
- 08. Picture hanging hardware
- 09. Leveler tool – because get your stuff straight, right?
LET’S GET BUILDING:
- Get your plywood board cut to size – since I did two beds I got both at 24″ length. For width, I got them cut at 76″ wide for a king bed and 60″ wide for a queen bed.
- Fabric time – Staple gun your batting first and then your fabric of choice on top. You’ll want to wrap the fabric around the edges of the board – I did this loosely with 2 inches or so to have room to staple the fabric into the board.
3. Hanging mount – to make sure it had some distance away from the wall, I screwed on this scrap wood that was about an inch thick and then the picture hanging hardware on top.
4. Installing on the wall – use a leveler to make sure you hang straight. To mount the leather strap – loop the strap around the headboard and the first nail will be for the back strap to lay flat on the wall (as shown above). And then you’ll nail in the top nail!
Price breakdown per headboard:
- Linen fabric: $15
- Quilt batting: $13 ($25 for a full roll that covered 2 headboards)
- Leather straps: $20
- Plywood: $9 (~$18 total for 2 headboards)
- Picture hardware: $3 (for a pack of 6)
- Supplies I already had: staple gun, nails, hammer, leveler
- Total: $60
What do you think of the headboard diy?! It was actually super simple and looks like a professional piece of furniture!
And as promised, here’s a before and after of the guest room progress! Loving this new and light feeling in the guest room. I loved the black, but loving this neutral vibe so much. What do you think of the changes?
