PSA: save your turkey bones!

turn your turkey bones into amazing broth that lasts up to 6+ months in the freezer. it’s the best for soup bases or any broth needs. after carving the turkey, i put all the bones into this big 16qt. pot and stuffed it in the fridge until i was ready to make broth.

first off – info on our goodies:

my apron from world market / our 16qt stock pot (similar) / quart containers – we saved up from to-go orders, but they are also avail on amazon

here’s what you’ll need:

  • turkey bones – save them all!
  • 3-4 carrots
  • 1 celery stalk
  • 2 garlic heads
  • 2 onions
  • mushroom butts – i used 15 butts this time!
  • 1/3 c peppercorns
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 sprig of thyme + parsley
  • 1 bay leaf
  • lots of water – covering all the goodies in the pot

here’s what i did:

  1. cut all the veggies up, no need to take off roots – we will be straining
  2. halve the onion and garlic – keep the skin on, makes the broth golden
  3. put all in the pot and cover with water
  4. bring to boil and then simmer for 3-5 hours
  5. let cool and strain
  6. then store away (store up to 6+ months in the freezer)

tips:

  • leave the skins on the onion, makes the broth golden!
  • save mushroom butts in the freezer as you eat, best add for broth making
  • skim top of broth if it gets foamy, gets rid of impurities
